Notes:
An book as unorthodox as the term itsself. Not officially a word yet playfully used all the way back to Mark Twain. This origin keeps the word rooted in non-sense. “As indeterminate, slightly slippery and open to interpretation as the travel experience itself.”
The physical description of vagabonding may look something like, “leaving the ordered world to travel on the cheap for an extended period of time.” in this course of action there is a deeper philosophy and manual to this method of travel which cuts through the noise and signals out to us would-be vagabonders a call into the world. To help us see it as it is, and experience it for the many lessons it has to offer us.
Declare your Independence
Oliver Stone’s Wall Street has a ridiculous line by a hotshot stock trader that was particularly memorable to Rolf. “If I can make a bundle of cash and get out of this racket before I’m thirty, I’ll be able to ride my motorcycle across China” Rolf comments, you could scrub toilets for 8 months and be able to do that.
Travel to most Americans has become a romanticized commodity that we throw money at for decoration. Within our culture we begin to equate these exotic destinations as something to purchase, and the more we give in to the idea that money is our lifeblood the more we give up on the possibility of having the experiences we want.
Personal travel has nothing to do with your demographic or wealth and everything to do with personal outlook. Long-term travel isn’t about your gap year, rebelling against society or a load of extra cash to blow. It’s about walking the world, being more intentional within your society. Using today’s age to expand your options instead of your possessions.
Vagabonding is a value adjustment, and attitude, an uncommon choice to see the world in a different light. Vagabonding is about seeing our most precious resource Time as it really is. A Wealth bestowed upon us. Vagabonding cuts the noise of the time-poor who take glances of novelty rather than immerse into where their feet are planted.
II. Getting Started
Earn your Freedom
Travel is not a myth we are meant to indefinitely shove off into the future. This cycle of dreaming up a trip only to let time wash it away is the tragic reality of most travel dreams. p.12 “Vagabonding is about gaining the courage to loosen our grip on the so-called certainties of this world” We must reject the passivity of letting life get in the way. Travel is uncertain, and by holding on to our domestic security we never have the room to embrace travel. Vagabonding can begin at any moment, it is the moment you start now and start seeing the world with possibility instead of a far-off dream, it’s when you start saving and deciding you will go into the world.

Where Should I go? “The slow, nuanced experience of a single country is always better than the hurried, superficial experience of forty countries.”
What do I bring? As little as possible. Home life, with our large comfort can’t prepare you for how little you need. The best place to start? Get a smaller backpack than you think you will need. This sets a hard limit on what you can bring. If you think you Might need something leave it. Everyone around the world has similar daily needs to you, you can purchase things there.
