Perhaps not the first piece I saw on the topic, but it definitely came to mind.
In convo with Austin we mentioned Irony vs. Sincerity. There is some overlap, but this is certainly a topic I want to see more of. I saw the trend growing up and I think it peaked with “That’s cringe” when I was in highschool. We’re moving back out of irony, but maybe gen alpha will have another wave?
Why does Irony exist? Perhaps it started as a kind of shaudenfreud, a “look at the misfortune of this guy” how ironic but then, we started using it ourselves in a kind of self deprecation. Using irony as a shield to do things while pretending they were for other reasons?
