Certainly not a maxim, but a personal rule I started when I began to notice my lack of agency and general laziness with (mostly computer) tasks.

If I ran into something that wasn’t clear or intuitive for me to figure out I would just stop. Allow that thing to be a serious obstacle, it would either become an excuse as to why I couldn’t complete something or something that I’d need to ask for help on first.

This is a horrible mode of operation once you get into the real world.

And so, ask for help later than you want to, try to help yourself first. Even if it’s just 5 minutes, kick yourself into solving this problem.
