Creatively applying information is a higher-order of note-taking than consumption
Consumption is well and good for taking in a transfer of information, however human minds have a different way of deciding what sticks than how a computer may do it, we are constantly auto-deleting information and must play to the algorithm of our memory (data management system)
When we creatively apply a piece of information we are telling our brains that the information is useful. Increasing the odds we would remember it.
There is also a base level requirement to understandign the information before we can think of applying it creatively in the first place. This work of figuring that out will help us understand the information better. See Understanding requires effortful engagement
