Fields and schools of thought are mediums

Thinking as a kind of art, our thoughts are trying to express something.

An impression, an idea, most of the time some banal desire or passing judgement. Though depending on where we place our focus, our thoughts begin to transform. They are transformed through mediums

Mediums transform the way with which we interact with reality.

McLuhan argued, “The medium itself shapes what kind of art is even possible.” We become immersed in the medium;

Interstellar would never exist as a play.

Because of certain fields and their theories, we’ve been able to express thoughts that never would have been possible previously.

We created the field of psychology to offer some structure to think about and attempt to understand the human mind. Alan Kay thought of McLuhan here, “I don’t know who discovered water but it wasn’t a fish!”

We see some artists with the feeling that expression within the medium is an exploration of it.

This is what makes learning tools for thought so interesting to me. It allows us to make better decisions and live better lives because of the quality of expression through our art is improved.
