Put more space between your inspiration and your own draft

When I try to take notes from another summary or write a blog post immediately after reading something I found inspiring, it looks too much like a copy.

It’s hard to take notes while looking at the original material, often you can’t think of a better way to word a concept in the moment.

We are transcribing material rather than thinking about it and digesting it.

We think of “getting it correct” as getting the exact words down, not the idea they are conveying.

This lag between consumption and reproduction is where we Do your own thinking, its when our mind forgets the exact words and tries to remember the relevance of what we read. If we can’t remember it well, chances are it wasn’t relevant anyway.

You may have to go through a few drafts of your own, but this is ultimately how we Re-invent the wheel rather than rolling along with it.
